There have been cases where a person lived with dead bodies and treated them as family. There have been a few serial killers who targeted old and middle-aged men, but for most part, they concentrate on young women. Serial killers usually target children and women. In most cases, the victims of serial killers are physically weaker than them. As the murdering spree continues, it becomes like a вЂfixвЂ™ that drug addicts require, and they get restless and violent if they are unable to kill. Serial killers have a vivid imagination that tends to be on the violent side and when they can, they obsess with living out their imagination. This low self-esteem and rejection usually finds a vent in brutally murdering innocent people. Children who grow up with a feeling of being unwanted and unloved, tend to become very violent and assertive in their adult life. This may branch from a background of child abuse, neglect and low self-esteem. They thrive on the feeling of being in charge and they will go to any extent to make sure they are. These people are obsessed with being in a position of power, sexually and in general life as well. Power has always been the center of a serial killerвЂ™s thinking.

The motive for killing nearly always consists of an element of hatred and fear, which may have its roots in the killerвЂ™s childhood. There is always something in common in the murders вЂ“ the use of a particular weapon, the race of the people killed, the age or gender, the profession, and at times, even the symbols on the body of the victim. The pattern of killing or the modus operandi is what gives serial killers their name. Though research is on continually, there is very little that helps us understand the psyche of a serial killerвЂ¦ДЄ serial killerвЂ™s psychology lies far beyond the grasp of normal human understanding. Abnormally high or low IQs have often been put forth as reasons behind the making of a serial killer, but of course, it is much more than that. In the 1960s a deinstitutionalization movement was suppressed stating that if a person had even a little bit of sanity in them they could not be institutionalized, even if they did have crazy thoughts or acts (185).Since the times of Jack the Ripper, researchers and investigators have struggled to understand the mind of a serial killer. However, there are more murders among the general public than in mental patients. Many people think that serial killers are mentally ill. Both of these examples sometimes make the kid feel rejected and out of place, which may lead to violent acts. Beaty also talks about how they moved around a lot and never got used to one place. She says that most killers as kids did not have a fatherly figure to look up to in times of need. They grow up thinking this and when things don't go their way they exemplify acts of violence that lead to the death of others. Throughout these forms, Beaty claims that children learn them and think that they are okay to do.

Violence comes in different forms from every day acts to cartoons. Many researchers believe that violence in our society today has a lot to do with the way serial killers think. They also believe that they should get what they want without having to put forth any effort. Most of these men cannot keep a consistent job because they get easily frustrated when opportunities are at a downfall. Out of those 350, almost all are attractive white males between the ages of twenty-five and thirty-five. There is also another astonishing number many estimate that there are 350 serial killers at large that we do not know about. Now serial killing has reached an unbelievable level.ДЄnn Rule, one of Beaty's sources, states that up to 5,000 people are victimized by serial killers in the United States of America each year (180). Serial killing is nothing new, it goes all the way back to Cain killing Abel in the Old Testament of the Bible. In La Donna Beaty's essay 'What Makes a Serial Killer?' she wanted to show what secrets and motivations a serial killer has.
